The Helmet of War Awakes
1999 © Tobin James Mueller
collaborative artwork for The Power of 10, a VisionForge MultiMedia Project
Dido Titania, the Keeper of the Portal to the Fifth Dimension, was painted by Ian Brand.
The lyre and wings were painted by Toy Takai.
All other artifacts are modeled by Tobin Mueller, most in the Bryce terrain editor
or in Poser 3. The wings of the altar statue, for example,
were first painted, then scanned, then a .pict file formed the basis of the shape
and ambient texture sculpted in side Bryce, with the bump map providing
realistic shading is a custom wood grain texture made in Bryce.
The circular portal is made of several layers of transparent lenses and images
The basic internal image is pict of an abstract Bryce rendering by Loannis Adonakis.
The statue holding the lens portal aloft was modeled in Poser 3, its texture is a
customized version of the brass seen in the two flanking altar adornments,
with a slightly offset transparent reflective texture created in Bryce.
The smoke and sky and lightning and shadow effects were painted in Painter 5.5
and layered together in Photoshop by Tobin.
A farther away view of the Temple can be seen in the untouched Bryce 3D rendering:
The Portal of the Power of 10.
The Power of 10 is an Online Collaborative Picture Book project
in its formative stages. As the initial illustrations are completed,
writers are sketching out the first chapters and musicians are composing theme music.
