They might actually be vertical ladders, or ladders to the underground.

The impression from these images is that the Late Neolithic Period of Brycelander may have experienced less benevolent times. Legend has it that i is from such creatures the "Conqueror" freed the Brycelanders, beginning the Early Monument Period.
