SHE II

The second time I hitchhiked for her
She wasn't expecting me or anything,
But I'd heard she was working at
Saks Fifth Avenue as a floor girl
And it had been a year since
And I figured I was over it
And it was my 18th birthday
And I'd put together this
Three-piece corduroy suit
And the three shades of
Brown almost matched.
Hey, I was staying above
Dukes poolroom in Providence
And a few people owed me money.

It was late November the whole way down.

A security guard followed me around at Saks
Till I finally asked and found her floor.
I spotted her before she saw me and a
Pain struck me between the eyes that
Knocked me down on to the rim of a
Giant cement palm planter and
There I sat stranded, dizzy,
Watching her move around.
I should have left then
But I waited till
She ran me off.

This isn't much of a poem,
But then sequels rarely are.
