Chair
After Edward Hopper

A chair to sit quiet in the sun
There to close the eyes without fear,
There to feel the softest breeze
Like a first hint of goodness.

Where rests the greater suffering?
Is it not found in the cure
Rather than in the illness?
So we choose continuance
Rather than repair.

So find me this lost anchorage,
A place to heal gently in the sun,
There to attend my thoughts without pain,
There the mountains pure on the horizon
Their cool clear breath on my skin
Like the first gift of health.
